bank and the electronic banking systems were interconnected. Customers were able to carry out their basic banking operations at the new entity s 270 branches. Some 39 of these branches were equipped to offer Personal Banking products e.g. savings and investment products and products specially designed for small and medium-sized busi- nesses. Larger companies were served through eight Business Centres. FBP-Dominet Bank as a whole had 400,000 customers and employed over 2,600 staff104.
From the 2008 crisis to acquisition by the BNP Paribas Group
In 2009, turbulence from the worldwide economic crisis began to impact Retail banking activity in Poland. The crisis soon stifled the country s growth. Fortis Banque had to adjust its strategy. There was no question of retreat; instead the bank sought to work out a sustainable growth strategy105.
At the end of the day however it was the parent bank itself that was shaken to its founda- tions by the 2008 crisis. Nevertheless, Fortis Banque s business in Poland was an impor- tant factor in the BNP Paribas Group s decision to take over the Fortis Banque Group. Hervé Gouëzel, who led the integration team merging the operations of the French and Belgian banks, did not fail to recognise the opportunities afforded by Fortis presence in Poland. We re hoping to make [Poland] a major territory for the BNP Paribas Group, by investing in and building on the setup that Fortis has already created there 106.
In May 2011, the name of the Polish subsidiary became BNP Paribas Bank Polska SA.
